13 Card Rummy Rules (13 Patti Rummy) Explained
Quick answer: 13 card rummy, often searched as 13 patti rummy, is the most popular form of Indian rummy. Each player gets 13 cards and must arrange them into valid sequences and sets. A valid declaration needs at least two sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence with no joker. It is a completely different game from Teen Patti, which uses only three cards.
Equipment
- Two to six players.
- Usually two decks with printed jokers for more than two players; one deck for two players.
- One random card is also chosen as a wild joker.
Valid groups
| Group | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pure sequence | Three or more consecutive cards of one suit, no joker | 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ |
| Impure sequence | Consecutive cards of one suit with a joker | 5♥ joker 7♥ |
| Set | Three or four cards of the same rank, different suits | 8♠ 8♦ 8♣ |
How a turn works
- Draw one card from the closed deck or the open discard pile.
- Discard one card to the open pile.
- When all 13 cards form valid groups, declare.
Declaring
A valid declaration needs at least two sequences, one of them pure. The rest can be sequences or sets. An invalid declaration is penalised.
Scoring (points format)
Losing players count the points of unmatched cards. Picture cards and aces usually count 10 points; number cards count face value; jokers count zero. Many games cap a losing hand at 80 points.
