Rummy Formats: Points, Pool and Deals Rummy

Quick answer: Indian rummy is played in three main formats. Points rummy is a single deal settled by points. Pool rummy (usually 101 or 201) eliminates players who pass a points limit over many deals. Deals rummy is played for a fixed number of deals, and the player with the most chips at the end wins. The 13-card rules are the same in all three.

Points rummy

One deal decides the game. The winner collects points from each loser based on their unmatched cards. It is quick, with games often finishing in a few minutes.

Pool rummy

Type Elimination at Note
101 pool 101 points Shorter games
201 pool 201 points Longer, more forgiving

Players accumulate points across deals. Anyone reaching the limit is eliminated. The last player remaining wins.

Deals rummy

All players start with the same chip count and play an agreed number of deals, often two or three. After each deal, the winner takes chips from the others according to their points. At the end, the most chips wins.

Which format suits whom?

  • Points: quick sessions.
  • Pool: patient players who enjoy long games.
  • Deals: players who want a fixed end point.
